Davis Woodbridge
This house, in the Berkeley foothills, provides panoramic views of San Francisco and the Bay. Clad in plywood sheets and cement plaster, the house floats downslope among its more solid neighbors. The main floor is a series of alcove spaces open to one another, whose qualities of light and color continually change. Vertical openings unite the flowing lower floors with the contained rooms above. Light pours over the wood bridge that unites parents' and children's realms, and cross-lights the kitchen below. A multitude of mysterious effects infuses this house with continual and daily surprises.
